DOMINICA Then and Now presents a fascinating pictorial history of Dominica from the early 1900s to the early 2000s. The book pairs vintage black and white photographs of the towns, villages, bridges, and other landmarks, with contemporary color photographs taken from about the same vantage points.
The book begins with the major changes in Roseau and its suburbs to include the Waterfront, the Carib Cinema, the Windsor Park, the Roseau River bridges and the Princess Margaret Hospital and other landmarks. Similar changes are presented for Portsmouth (especially Benjamin Park), Colihaut, St. Joseph, Canefield, Pointe Michel, Scotts Head, Marigot and other towns and villages.
Carnival or Mas Domnik-The Real Mas, is a major cultural celebration which dates to the days of slavery with roots in Western African culture. The book celebrates these cultural traditions by highlighting the changes in costumes, parades of bands, carnival queens and kings, and music delivery systems.
A section of the book is dedicated to the old-time cricketers of the 1950s to the 70s. It highlights the cricket venues, playing conditions, equipment, protective gear and the accomplishments of these cricketers from the olden days to today. The old-timers are memorialized by a series of national cricket teams from the 1950s to the 1970s, together with a listing of cricket icons and Hall of Famers of that period.
The book begins with the short-lived Federation of the West Indies (1958 – 1962) followed by changes in government structure from colonial times, with Governors and Legislative Councils, to Associated Statehood, with Administrators, Chief Ministers and Premiers, to Independence with Prime Ministers, Presidents and opposition leaders today. It ends with the evolution and history of the government.
